TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) SUSPENDED DUE TO COVID-19

Dr. Friedman offers TMS, a non-invasive, non-systemic (not circulating in the bloodstream) depression treatment.

TMS is the first depression treatment of its kind to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (October 2008).   The treatment, which is far safer and more convenient than electro-shock treatment (ECT), is clinically proven for the treatment of major depression in adults who have failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from antidepressant medication.   This innovative treatment consists of focused, gentle magnetic stimulation (using a small MRI magnet) for thirty 40-minute sessions over 4-6 weeks, without use of sedation.   Once inside the brain, the magnetic pulses induce a mild electrical current to flow, which cannot be felt by the patient, but which causes the brain cells to become active and are thought to lead to the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine.  Patients sit comfortably, watching TV while awake, in a recliner chair during each session.  After treatment, patients can drive and resume normal activity.

TMS may be appropriate for you if some of the following are true:

-you get inadequate benefit from your current medication treatment
-you are taking too much medication to treat your depression
-side effects outweigh the benefits
-depression is affecting your ability to make a living
-depression still controls too much of your life.
